Installing the Yakima
0124c Q Tower Complete Gutterless Car Roof Rack is one of Yakima’s
more complex racks,
consisting of Q Towers, load bars, and Q Clips. Although the difficulty
level is dependent on your vehicle, most installations really are much
simpler than you might expect. The
best tip we can give you is to set up the front and rear crossbars
completely before you attempt to mount the racks to your vehicle.
First, remove the Yakima Q Tower cams completely from the towers. You
do this by flipping the cam up and loosening the tension bolt in the
middle of the cam. Then pull back
the plastic Q Tower housing, this will allow access to the Allen bolt
that will tighten the Yakima Q Towers to the crossbars. The Allen bolt
will be located on the right side.. Then, using the included Allen wrench, loosen
these bolts to allow the insertion of the load bars. After inserting
the bar into the towers place them on a flat surface so that the
Yakima Q Towers do not rotate on the crossbars when tightening.
Otherwise, the Yakima Q Towers will not sit flat on your vehicle's
rooftop. Measure out the distance between the Yakima Q
Towers, which is specified in the Yakima Q Clip instructions,
After accurately measuring the
Yakima Q Tower distances and tightening the towers to the bars,
assemble the Yakima Q Clips to the cams. This is accomplished by
sliding the clips up into the cams (numbered side facing you),
inserting the lock core housing from the back, and sliding the
retaining clip down over the front of the lock housing. Once
you have the clips attached to the cams, mount the protective
stickers to the Q Clips. Then re-attach the cams to the towers, making
sure to match the correct clips to the front and rear bars if your
vehicle uses different clips front and back. The protective silicone
pads that come with the
Yakima Q Clips can be attached just before you’re about to mount the
rack to your vehicle. The last step before mounting the crossbars to
your vehicle would be to label the front and back crossbars with the
provided stickers.
Mount the assembled crossbars to your vehicle’s rooftop by following the measurements given in the Yakima Q Clip instructions. The Yakima Q Clip instructions will give you the measurement from the windshield to the base of the front tower. When you have the correct distance measured out on both sides, pull the clips out and down around the edge of the door jamb and position the clips accordingly. Then tighten the tension bolt until the cam can be squeezed shut. If the tension bolt is over tightened the cam will not close. Make sure that you do not force the cam close. This can cause the cam to crack. When closing the cam you want the tension to be tight enough to hold the bar in place, but not so tight that you can’t close the cam. For the rear bar, the Yakima Q Clip instructions will give you the measurement from the middle of the front crossbar to the middle of the rear crossbar. Once you have that measured out, pull the clips around the edge of the door jamb, position the clips according to instructions, and close the cams. Most importantly make sure that all measurements are accurate.
Test
The Installation
Push up on the end of bar to test the
installation. Also, grab the bar near the towers and pull back
and forth. If the tower slides or the crossbar can rotate, check
the tower for tightness and re-tighten.

The Yakima Q Towers sit about 5” high from your vehicle's roof top. We will supply you with Yakima's recommended bar length unless you specify otherwise. Yakima SKS Lock Cores are sold separately.
